Clean Tige 22i - so roomy they call it "the living room of inboard tow boats"

If you want to go big in wakeboarding, you’ve got to get big (By that, we don’t mean you should eat your way to 500 pounds
— though we’d love to see the hefty you try to land a scarecrow). When it comes to direct-drive wakeboarding boats, square foot for square foot, there’s nothing bigger than the Tige 22i Type R.

With a brand-new hull design for 2003 measuring out at 22 feet, 4 inches and a width of 102 inches, this model aims to maximize the trademark Tige performance. It holds speed exceptionally well with great tracking and responsiveness, the sort of handling you hope for from a high-end inboard. For a larger boat, it even rounds through power turns in a way that doesn’t disappoint. Wakeboarding wakes feature steady transitions, good landing zones and clean, crisp double-ups.

To accomplish all that, the 22i puts Tige’s innovations to optimal use. The TAPS system works with the new ConvexV hull to transform Dr. Jekyll wakes into Mr. Hyde monstrosities. The Triple Threat ballast system, available as an extreme enhancer on Tige’s Type R and Riders Edition models, loads down the boat with up to 600 pounds in semi-permanent carpeted ballast and 1,000 pounds in four bags.

Serious stuff, but don’t feel so overwhelmed that you can’t appreciate another feature that sets the 22i apart: its unique interior layout. Again, the seating makes the most of the direct-drive configuration by turning the engine box into the primo seat in the house. It’s perfectly situated for straight-on, centered viewing of the wakeboarding show. The 22i forgoes a traditional sun deck for seats up against the back edge to put you in the show’s front row — and to better distribute passenger weight. A welcome step-through notch over the transom opens up much easier access to the expansive swim platform. And rather than placement for one fat sack in the rear, as is the usual case in direct-drives, this boat can accommodate two sacks there, stowed in big corner compartments.

For serious wakeboarders, this boat is a very big deal.
